We leave towards the south of the island along the west coast, to discover the magnificent sites of the island. Let's go for a complete tour of reunion island!
Step 1: the Geyser!
This is a natural phenomenon produced by the sea waves. The water enters inside a cavity, pressure raises suddenly, and a great geyser appears ! The Geyser can sometime be higher than 20 meters!

Step 2: the black sand beach!
Then, we stop on the longest black sand beach of the island: the beach of the Etang Salé, a mixture of olivines and volcanic sand, an extraordinary beauty.
Step 5: Langevin!
Let's continue our road trip on the south direction, and have a break at the Langevin river. The waterfall Grand Galet is one of the most beautiful waterfall of Reunion Island. It looks like a postal card !
Step 3: the Chasm !
Let's drive again a few minutes and discover the Chasm of Etang Salé, a natural volcano rift along the ocean. The site is very nice and particularly impressive when there is swell!
A short ride (option) is possible at a nice place named "Trou Noir" : peacefull nest among the incredible green tropical vegetation.
Step 4: Manapany viewing point!
This viewpoint offers a superb panorama of the Indian Ocean and the green village of Manapany les Bains. You can see the long beach as well as the swimming pool.
Step 6: Cap Méchant!
We now arrive at the famous Cap Méchant: we will have lunch here. The place is most surprising: an incredible green grass is covering ebene black rocks close to the deep blue of the ocean. A unique landscape where the forces of nature are fully expressed!
Step 7: the lava road!
We now arrive in the "Grand Brûlé": what is this place? During large volcanic eruptions, the lava flows along the flank of the volcano in a very wide corridor (the Grand Brûlé) before going in the ocean. After the erruption, there are gigantic fields of solidified volcanic lava. A single road crosses this unique landscape: its name is the lava road, let's go!
Step 8: the church "Notre Dame des Laves"
Let's continue the trip to Sainte Rose, where the church "Notre Dame des Laves" still stands proudly. It was indeed in 1977, during a large volcanic eruption, that a lava flow destroyed everything in its path, but miraculously stopped at the entrance of the building before bypassing it. The legend was born.
Step 9: the East river bridge!
Shortly after Saint Rose, we stop near an old suspension bridge over the East river. With a maximum span of 152 meters, it was at its construction in 1894 the longest bridge in the world! Today, It is still a very nice construction, but unfortunately, it is forbidden to walk or circulate on it. However, a national renovation project is on process to rehabilitate this unique monument in the world.
Step 10: the Niagara waterfall!
Now, let's go to the north towards Sainte Suzanne, take a narrow road in the middle of the sugar cane fields, and arrive in a small and lovely cove: here is a very beautiful waterfall. It is called Niagara, because duriang heavy rains, its flow can be torrential, like the famous Niagara Falls!
Step 11: the Barachois of Saint Denis
The Barachois of Saint Denis is an emblematic place of Reunion Island.
It was once a small port. Some old cannons, supposed to counter the English invasion in 1810, still face the sea. Today, it is a very popular place to walk, located near the prefecture and the statue of the 1st world war hero: Roland Garros.
Step 12: Cap la Houssaye
It is now time to go back on the west side! Our tour of the island will end with this last step: Cap la Houssaye. This place generously offers us two completely different environment.
The savannah and its golden herbs under the very hot sun gives to this place an African style: but where are the lions???
The vertical cliffs hurted by the waves of the ocean. You may apppreciate the splendid panorama of the entire bay of Saint Paul.
